GPs in Suffolk and north east Essex are encouraging people to prepare for the August bank holiday weekend.
GP practices will be closed on Monday August 26.
Dr Christopher Browning, GP in Long Melford and Chairman of NHS West Suffolk Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “The holiday weekend is a great opportunity for getting out and about, spending time with family and friends and enjoying some activity time. I would encourage you to spend a few moments to consider how you can be best prepared to deal with injury or illness if it occurs over the holiday period.
“By doing so you’ll know what to do and where to go for help and advice and could avoid an unnecessary trip to the hospital’s emergency department – or even a stay in hospital.”
Dr Mark Shenton, a GP in Stowmarket and Chairman of NHS Ipswich and East Suffolk Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “If you are feeling unwell, don’t let the situation deteriorate or settle for hoping it will go away. Talk to your pharmacist or call NHS 111 for help and advice. If you know an elderly person who is unwell, encourage them to seek help, or alternatively, call NHS 111 or speak to their local pharmacist on their behalf.
“If you use repeat prescription medicine make sure you have enough to last for the bank holiday. It takes at least 48 hours for your GP practice to process a repeat prescription request and your GP practice will be closed on bank holiday Monday.”
Dr Prashant Arora, GP at St James’ Surgery in Clacton and Tendring GP Elected Member of NHS North East Essex Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “Keep a basic supply of medicines such as sticking plasters, diarrhoea remedy, paracetamol and antihistamines at home. By doing so you’ll be equipped to deal with common ailments quickly and easily.
“Some pharmacies will be open on the bank holiday Monday and are the place to go for help and advice if you are feeling unwell. NHS 111 by phone and online offers urgent medical help and advice 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”
