Mothers, fathers and carers who are feeling isolated at home after the birth of their children now have the opportunity to escape their house for a few hours and meet other like-minded people.
Local charity, Get Me Out The Four Walls, offers regular get-togethers and social events across Suffolk – with the aim of supporting good mental wellbeing and helping people through this exciting but challenging time of their life through conversation, chat and the sharing of experiences.
Get Me Out The Four Walls is commissioned by NHS Ipswich and East Suffolk and NHS West Suffolk clinical commissioning groups.
The group is expanding throughout Suffolk with ambassadors already hosting meets in Ipswich, Stowmarket, Hadleigh, Felixstowe and Bury St Edmunds.
Dr Rosalind Tandy, a GP in Bury St Edmunds and mental health lead for NHS West Suffolk Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “Being a new parent can be joyful but that’s not the case for everyone. For many people the initial elation can quickly turn to exhaustion, helplessness and loneliness, and develop into more serious mental health conditions such as post-natal depression.
“Not everyone needs medical intervention to deal with post-pregnancy issues which is why Get Me Out The Four Walls is such a great initiative. Just being able to get out of the house and into a new environment and enjoy a coffee and chat with someone who’s going through the same experience can give one a real boost.”
Kelly Moulds, Director of Get Me Out The Four Walls, said “This is such an exciting time for Get Me Out The Four Walls to be expanding into Suffolk. It is so important for mothers, fathers and carers to have a support network around them. Becoming a new parent can feel the loneliest place ever; our aim is to ensure parents do not feel like that. Our ambassadors show such empathy and inclusion to everyone who attends their meets. Peer support is vital and it allows people to open up and discuss how they are feeling.”
Quotes from participants
Sara, Bury St Edmunds
“Being a part of (Get Me Out The Four Walls) GMOTFW has given me a renewed confidence. Just knowing that the other parents in the meet are completely non judgmental and fully supportive, helps me to actually get out. Knowing that even on my worst days I will always leave a GMOTFW meet with a smile and that I can feel ‘normal’ in my mental health struggles has been invaluable and has enabled me to have so many more confident enjoyable days as a parent, especially as a SEN parent.”
“The first time I attended a meet I had my toddler with me and was heavily pregnant with my second. The ladies were so welcoming and friendly. It’s lovely to spend time with people who accept you and there is no pressure. I’m glad to have found the group and always pass the information on to any new parents that I speak to.”
